Introduction and Mission
Akron Canine Rescued Angels, Inc. began in November of 2008 as a result of the dreams of two women, committed to the welfare of animals and already involved in rescue efforts. One was a volunteer in another rescue and the other, our current president, Beverlee Richards, was the Assistant DCO of Newstead and was looking for a rescue volunteer opportunity for herself. A sign in the local grocery store, with a plea for rescue foster home volunteers, brought them together and they soon became good friends.
They spent the spring and summer of 2008 as volunteers for another rescue, pulling, fostering and placing many dogs in forever homes. In the fall of 2008, they began talking about starting their own rescue.
Akron Canine Rescued Angels, Inc. (ACRA) was incorporated Nov 6, 2008. The name came from one of our adopters, a great woman named Susan, who had already adopted three dogs from us after losing her beloved Baloo. Susan offered the name Akron Canine Rescue Angels because, she said, we were angels in helping her find “Her Boys”. Well, angels we are not, but we liked the name, and by adding a “d” to the word Rescue, the dogs became the “angels” and the name was established.
Our mission at ACRA is to rescue unwanted dogs/puppies from shelters or homes and adopt them to loving forever homes. We provide foster care and obtain vet care if needed until an approved and suitable home is found. We have a stringent screening process for adoptions that includes home visits, vet reference checking, and suitability matching based on the individual dog’s personality and needs and the prospective adoptee’s situation. We do our best to ensure the dogs are healthy and of sound temperament, and to match the right dog with the right family. Our goal is a Forever Home for each dog. Our slogan is Saving God’s Lost Dogs, One at a Time.
Today, we are an active rescue operation with 18 foster home volunteers and a group of ten (and more, depending on emergencies) shelters that we work with regularly, in states as far away as Alabama. Our dogs are transported safely through a relay network of transport volunteers and coordinators, who volunteer their time (and their homes, in some cases) to bring our dogs into Western New York to the waiting hands of our foster families. From placing 22 dogs in our first year in 2008, we have placed a total of more than 1600 dogs in forever homes. We have an active web site ►www.akroncaninerescuedangels.org◄ and are members of Petfinder.com. We provide community outreach through participation in pet-related events held throughout the area and also through adoption events at local pet supply retailers. We have Federal non-profit 501(c) 3 status and all donations are tax-deductible and can be made via our website.
Thanks to our family and friends who have supported and loved us through this long process of becoming AKRON CANINE RESCUED ANGELS, INC.
